LITIGATION MANAGER WANTED IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (Orange)
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES The Litigation Manager is responsible for the oversight and monitoring of pending or potential litigation and reports in a timely manner to client inquiries regarding contractual risk transfer methods, indemnification agreements, and special event coverages. The Litigation Manager also provides oversight to the Risk Control Department with regard to police chief forums and other trainings as requested.
KEY DUTIES •Oversees all liability litigation claims pertinent to assigned clients (additionally workers’ compensation claims and employment claims) •Performs quarterly review of claims files, including any new claims likely to exceed fifty percent of the retained limits of the involved client and those claims for which a member, the Board of Directors, or the Executive Committee has requested specific review •Reviews on a regular basis all open claims in excess of the involved clients retained limit and recommends appropriate action •Summarizes and reports on active claims that are of general interest to the client •Advises on the selection of legal representation in anticipation of litigation •Monitors and analyzes the effectiveness of defense firms, investigators, and the overall management of litigation •Advises clients regarding claims and/or procedures •Responds in an efficient and helpful manner to all requests for advice or information •Serves as in-house legal advisor on any matters relevant to field of knowledge •Acts as a resource to all claims supervisors and adjusters retained by clients •Advises on contractual transfer of risk, governing documents, structure, and bylaws of new and existing clients •Acts as a mentor to support staff as necessary •Supplies draft ordinances and resolutions to clients •Coordinates and communicates with assigned counsel including monitoring of legal defense bills •Appears at proceedings, mock trials, mediations, arbitrations, mandatory settlement conferences, and appeals •Lectures and trains members on claims procedures and risk transfer techniques •Performs other tasks upon request Required Skills SKILLS AND ABILITIES •Effectively presents information and responds to questions from Board Members, TPAs, and others •Works in a timely, organized manner, prioritizing workload and assignments •Works well independently, exercises sound judgment, and utilizes initiative and creativity to identify solutions and solve problems •Work evidences excellent written and verbal communication skills, including proofreading skills and grammatical skills •Team player that delegates work appropriately, receives delegated work in an appropriate manner, and assists other employees as necessary •Exercises sound judgment and utilizes initiative and creativity to identify solutions and solve problems •Evidences proficiency in basic computer skills Required Experience QUALIFICATIONS •LLB or JD and California State Bar license in good standing •Five to seven years of claims litigation experience with significant experience in one specialized area (workers’ compensation claims, employment claims, and/or liability claims) Job Location Sacramento, California, United States Position Type Full-Time/Regular Orange, California will be a possible location for this position as well.
