Lawyers


Attorneys or legal professionals who want to write
If you are an attorney and wish to submit an original article or a topic suggestion to California Lawyer, send a brief proposal (not a completed article) to the appropriate editor. Please do not send unsolicited manuscripts. Below are our writers’ guidelines.

Expert Advice
A column offering specific, practical tips on an area of law or practice management. (650-750 words) Send proposals and ideas to our legal editor, Bo Links via email.

Tech
A column related to lawyers and technology. (up to 1,000 words) Send proposals and ideas to our Tech editor, via email.

MCLE
An article on a particular aspect of the law. (2,300-2,400 words) Send proposals and ideas to our legal editor, Bo Links via email.

Blog Posts
Posts on practice management for our website, www.callawyer.com. (500-750 words) Send proposals and ideas to our contributing editor via email. Please do not send completed articles.

First Person
A first-hand account column about a personal experience. (700 words) Send proposals and ideas to our contributing editor via email.

In House
A column about an aspect of working as corporate counsel in California. (up to 1,000 words) Send proposals and ideas to our In House editor, via email.

Freelance Writers


If you are a writer, you are welcome to pitch article ideas for in-depth legal stories or ESQ., our news and trends department. Please do not send unsolicited manuscripts. Read our writers’ guidelines for freelance writers below.

We will consider well-researched, in-depth stories on the law, including legal trends of statewide and national significance, thought-provoking legal issues, and profiles of lawyers doing groundbreaking work. We will consider local issues if they have statewide or national implications or if you have a new unique angle to the story.

Send your pitch to the editor via email. Let us know in two or three paragraphs what you intend to cover, why it’s important, and how you will cover it. The query should also tell us how you will approach the story and why you are qualified to write about the subject. Please include your resume and two or three of your most relevant clips.


ESQ. Our news department includes shorter items on current case law, state and national politics and legislation, shifts in the legal marketplace and pro bono work.
