Born Yesterday (1950)

May 2012

"What if I told you this whole operation is strictly according to the law?"

"Then I'd say the law needs revision."

In Born Yesterday (1950), lawyer Jim Devery (Howard St. John, not shown) tries to convince journalist Paul Verrall (William Holden, right) and Billie Dawn (Judy Holliday, left) that his client's business is on the up-and-up.

As a newly promoted deputy D.A. in Orange County in 1966 I was a member of the recently constituted felony panel. A field trip was taken to the state prison in Chino by our 8 or 9 man group. During the tour we learned a then-unfamiliar term: Recidivism. On the way back to Santa Ana in the county van, during a lull in the conversation one of our group quietly said "Did you guys know that the recidivism rate for matricide is zero?"
