Justice William W. Bedsworth

May 2012

"Sanctions are serious business. They deserve more thought than the choice of a salad dressing. 'I'll have the sanctions, please. No, on second thought, bring me the balsamic; I'm trying to lose a few pounds.' "

Acting Presiding Justice William W. Bedsworth of the Fourth Appellate District comments on a $10,000 sanctions order against an attorney who improperly filed boilerplate sanctions allegations in an appellate brief copying text erroneously from a separate case and including no pertinent factual statements to support it (Kim v. Westmoore Partners, Inc., 201 Cal. App. 4th 267, 293 (2011)).
